Artist’s Statement

The physical act of making is an expression of the physicality of my body. Foregoing models, I use my own transgender, chronically ill body in a fragmentary practice that defies categorization. These self portraits become dis-identified and resist portraiture in favor of expressionist surrealist imagery and endurance performance. My figures are slight and skeletal boygirls who open themselves to pain and rejoice in the intimacy of disgust.

Biography

Jonah Brock is from a small railroad town in central Illinois. In 2021 he received a B.A. in Visual Art and Art History from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. His work has been exhibited in various locations, such as the Museum of Art Fort Collins in Fort Collins, CO, the Holy Art Gallery in London, ENG, and GOCA-Galleries of Contemporary Art in Colorado Springs, CO. He is currently based in Baltimore, MD.
