The Machine Shop is proud to present Heirlooms: new work by Jem Brock
Exhibition opening: Friday, November 6th, 2020, 6-9 pm, in person with limited entrance, our garage door will be wide open for extra ventilation. Work will also be visible and available for purchase online.
About the show: With titles such as Prayer, Bedtime Stories, and What Comes After, the pieces in Heirlooms function like symbolism in storytelling. Using the language of abstraction in both sculptures and prints, Jem manipulates the historic role of the tied knot as a binding agent in commentary on the ancestral and hereditary. Heirlooms is a body of work about what we inherit from our families, objects to be discovered in the dusty corners of attics.
Artist Bio: Jem Brock was born and raised in central Illinois before relocating to Colorado, where he attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to pursue a B.A. in Visual Arts and Art History. While working on his undergraduate degree, he served as Co-President of the UCCS Art Club, the Visual Arts Student Representative in the Visual & Performing Arts Department Chair’s Council, and as Student Advisor at GOCA-Galleries of Contemporary Art. He has exhibited in various locations, including White Trash Gallery in La Salle, IL, The Dock in Colorado Springs, CO, and the Museum of Art Fort Collins in Fort Collins, CO. In addition to his visual arts practice, he is also a writer, and performed spoken word poetry in 2019 at TEDxColorado Springs: Frontiers.
